Accidents and Weddings

Hello all, here is another blog.

So this week has been quite exciting, it all started on Sunday with our presentation of El Refugio at the base meeting in front of all the YWAMers and the students of the 5 schools that are running at the moment. We have a visitor from YWAM London at the moment, Roxanne from Argentina, so it was great to hear her preach, and we were due to present after her. However, it all went pear-shaped when the power went off in the middle of her preach meaning we had no lights, sound or video projector, which basically meant we would not be able to do anything! After a quick conflab it was decided that we would present on Monday before the evening class. So I went off to my friend Rosa's for the evening which was really great as we haven't hung out for ages.

So Monday started quite ordinarily until Johanna came running out of her office at the front of the building saying something that I didnt catch and went to the door, Esther joined her so I went to see what was going on. It seemed a motorcyclist had been knocked off his bike by a bus! The bike was wedged under the front of the bus but the rider had been thrown off and was lying on the street surrounded by people. Since I have been trained in first aid for several years but never used it, I thought I had better go and see if there was anything I could do. So I sat beside him and asked where it hurt, he said his lower leg so I had a feel and even through the jeans I could feel the shin bone sticking out!! so I carefully lifted the jeans up to get a look and (thankfully no blood) could see the bone under the skin, other than that he had a grazed elbow. the crowd all around kept trying to "help" by taking his helmet off!! putting cardboard under him?? including under his bad leg!!! they did also cover his head from the sun which was good and someone rang his wife for him to let her know what was happening, I guess she called his work colleague who came shortly after and took his belongings for him, including his money as apparently if you take this with you to hospital it is likely to get stolen!!!

I stayed with him holding his hand so he could squeeze it against the pain, until the ambulance came, protecting him from other "helpers" and chatting with him (someone had decided it wasn't good for him to close his eyes and rather than talking to him decided to practically gauge his eyes out to open them!!!)  One thing which did strike me was that some of the older women who stopped put their hands out and started praying for him, that is something you wouldn't get in the UK!! People might pray in that situation but quietly to themselves not hands outstretched towards him and praying outloud!!

The afternoon was then quieter, I went to Rosa's again in the afternoon so her husband John could help me out with some issues I was having with my video editing program and then it was back to the base for the presentation, only 24hours later! The presentation went well, we were able to introduce Julia and demonstrate what we do on Fridays and showed the new video that Larissa put together for us.

Tuesday also passed without incident, the parents meeting went well, although we have less parents coming at the moment, about 7, we had some good discussions, I think smaller groups work better with them.

Then today, our newly-weds came down to discuss the plans for the religious service. They had their civil ceremony in June, however want to have the religious ceremony in November and we have offered to help. We are not helping them financially, but we are helping them in borrowing things like wedding dress and chairs and tables, and possibly letting them use our building as a venue. It is a bit small for them so they are going to talk about it and then let us know if they want to use it, there are a couple of other options. As anyone knows I am obsessed with weddings and such parties, so am loving the challenge of giving them the wedding of their dreams on a very tight budget, about £100!

Well that's all the news from this week so until next week take care and God Bless
Petra
